Liz Solo and The Ocarina of Time
Artist/Mother/Mother-in-Law Beats The Game!
Liz Solo's most recent Installation/Performance Piece - Liz Solo and the Ocarina of Time - was presented by Edge Intermedia and Liz Solo July 29th and 30th at the Edge Intermedia Lab in St. John's. The event also featured Live Drawing and performances by DJ Skratch Two, the Unknown Drummer, Beat City Nights, Allie Oop and Krystle Hayden. The game was projected large (8.5 X 12 feet) and the Artist played for 24 hours straight. The Artist beat "Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time" in 23 hours and 57 minutes, meeting her challenge to conquer the game in less than 24 hours. Thanks to all who came out to support the endeavor. Very special thanks to Montgomery Hall, Mike Kean, Sam Hall and Eli Whalen for their contributions.
Many have asked the question "Why?". Here is Liz Solo's statement on that:
"Why did I play a Nintendo game for 24 hours straight? For the same reason people climb mountains.. I did it because I can and because I wanted to... I did it for the love of experiment ... and because for 24 hours I was immersed in a world where I could defeat demons, overcome challenges, fight monsters, liberate the oppressed and ultimately conquer evil and return the world to a peaceful,
righteous place. The presentation was an awesome experience, it bordered on the immersive at times. It became very emotional at the end, the audience was really engaged. It was a personal success for me both as a gamer and as a practicing artist commited for some time to exploring and producing work in immersive and virtual environments. This Zelda Project was the first manifestion of work resulting from my new oeuvre - "Work With What You Have". Stay tuned for more video game based works in the future."
This presentation was a fundraising event for Liz Solo and the Edge Intermedia Media Lab Fund. It was produced by Liz Solo with help from Edge Intermedia members.
