/hug

This month Liz Solo has been concentrating on the Third Faction collaboration and the presentation of the /hug project. /hug is engaged in providing humanitarian aid and cross-factional assistance to avatars in the online MMORPG World of Warcraft. Documentation from the work of /hug is currently being featured as part of the "WoW Emergent Media Phenomenon" exhibition at the Laguna Art Museum, Laguna California.
"WoW: Emergent Media Phenomenon explores various forms of cultural production based on World of Warcraft in particular and on gaming in general. While surveying Warcraft's Fifteen-year history, the exhibition looks at artistic practices that have been influenced by game culture. The actual works by the producer of World of Warcraft, Blizzard Entertainment, provide a starting point and reference."

Live Birth at Alternator Centre

Liz Solo has just closed a gallery installation at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art in Kelowna, British Columbia. "Live Home Alien Birth" (or The Birth of the World) is a video installation and live online performance. Liz was thrilled to present her work alongside of Australian artist Mary Ann (Mez) Breeze. Liz and Mez created two unique performances that existed within the mainstream virtual world of Second Life. The curatorial theme behind these two performances explored the qualitative properties of being “inhuman”, “alien” or “other” in a virtual world.

In "birth" - after exploring the clinics and pregnancy packages offered by various establishments in the virtual world, Liz decided on a Home Birth. Little did she know that she was carrying multiples! The birth/performance took place on Odyssey Island in Second Life and live in the gallery at Kelowna in April 2009. Liz relied on support and coaching from the live audience and her collaborators Second Front and – the Avatar Orchestra Metaverse as she labored and delivered her virtual children at home. The virtual performance produced residue that was exhibited throughout the duration of the exhibition at the Alternator Gallery. Show curated by Jeremy Owen Turner. Stay tuned for video documentation, coming soon. Find out more and see some great images of the event by Bibbe Hansen/Bibbe Oh on Liz Solo's Machine I Am Blog

Here is an excerpt from the most recent review of "alien", from The Scope in St. John's, Newfoundland:
Liz Solo's voice is equal parts bitch-goddess and girlish fragility.. her songs are of loss, forgiveness, frustration, scars, bruises, love and the universe. Instrumentation on "alien" ranges from sweet, delicate layering to thick electric rawk. The depths of downtown St. John's and the heights of outer space meet here".
Liz's Cd is available at all of her live shows and very select retail including Fred's Records, The Travel Bug and The Reject Room in St. John's. Downloads available soon on iTunes through Rock Can Roll Independent.

alien features 14 original tracks recorded at Rock Can Roll Studios during the summer and Fall of 2007. Recorded and mixed by Liz Solo, Steve Abbott and Mike Kean.
